Works Hanging on the Fences
An overview of the emerging decade of contemporary and avant-garde art in China. By adopting the form of an exhibition catalogue, this book collects essential artworks and points of perspective from active artists of the time, showcases memories and history which were not officially documented. The book title was inspired by a major art exhibition which took place on the street around China National Museum of Art on 1979, when self-organized artists and citizens hung their works on the fences of curbside, therefore became an street exhibition outside of the museum. This strongly indicates the nature which art flourished in a radical way during that 10 years.
